Patient in his early 50s who was involved in a car accident and developed a large disc herniation at the T11-12 level. The disc was evaluated and it appeared to be slightly calcified with severe compression of the thoracic spinal cord. The patient developed significant myelopathy in his lower extremities with hyperreflexia, clonus* and no hypoesthesias (numbness). Patient had difficulty with ambulation secondary to loss of coordination.
We performed a T11-12 lateral extracavitary approach for thoracic discectomy and a T10 to L1 instrumentation and fusion due to the junctional level.
The patient is doing well post-surgery with symptoms in the leg nearly completely resolved upon evaluation at his second post-op visit, four weeks after
